Key Architectural Outcomes & Engineering Deliverables
Core verification criteria and mission milestones established by this document
- Ingests real-time endpoint FDR (Falcon Data Replicator) streaming telemetry into Splunk index clusters.
- Applies CIM (Common Information Model) mapping for accelerated correlation and behavioral anomaly alerts.
- Defines automated triage playbooks reducing Mean Time to Detect (MTTD) from hours to sub-30 seconds.
- Enforces strict data retention, tamper-evident audit logs, and SOC 2 / FedRAMP audit compliance.
1. Operational Overview
A modern Security Operations Center (SOC) requires deterministic, low-latency telemetry correlation between endpoint detection sensors and centralized SIEM analytics.
This SOP provides the configuration standards for coupling CrowdStrike Falcon EDR with Splunk Enterprise Security (ES), ensuring every credential access attempt, suspicious child process, or lateral movement technique is correlated within seconds.

3. High-Severity Splunk Correlation Query (SPL)
Detecting anomalous credential dumping via LSASS process access or token impersonation:
index=endpoint sourcetype="crowdstrike:events:json" EventType="ProcessRollup2"
| search (CommandLine="*mimikatz*" OR CommandLine="*sekurlsa*" OR CommandLine="*procdump*lsass*" OR FileName="lsass.exe")
| eval host_risk_score=case(Severity="Critical", 100, Severity="High", 80, true(), 50)
| stats count, values(CommandLine) as ExecutedCmds, values(UserName) as Users by ComputerName, ParentBaseFileName
| where count > 0
| eval mitre_tactic="T1003.001 - OS Credential Dumping"
4. Automated Host Containment Protocol
When a correlation search fires with a Critical confidence score:
- Automated Containment Dispatch: The Splunk Adaptive Response Action executes a secure POST request to the CrowdStrike Falcon OAuth API:
curl -X POST "https://api.crowdstrike.com/devices/entities/devices-actions/v1?action_name=contain" -H "Authorization: Bearer ${FALCON_BEARER_TOKEN}" -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"ids": ["'${device_id}'"]}' - SOC Notification: Alert dispatched to PagerDuty with MITRE ATT&CK matrix tags and memory snapshot URI.
- Forensic Preservation: System memory and disk artifacts are preserved before rebooting.
5. SOC Verification Checklist
- Splunk HTTP Event Collector (HEC) configured with dedicated SSL certificate and token-based load balancing.
- Event index parsed against Splunk Common Information Model (CIM) with 0 field extraction drops.
- CrowdStrike Falcon API client credentials rotated every 90 days with least-privilege scoping.
- Automated isolation tested in staging enclave without impacting adjacent domain controllers.
